  COMPETITION TIME and FORMAT CHANGES

TIMES

· Competition nights are Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs.

Practice started week beginning Mon 1 Feb 2021 - matches commenced week beginning Mon 8 Feb 2021

Bookings essential - ring 0498 003 788

· Each night divided into two sessions: EARLY or LATE.

EARLY session 6pm-7.30pm. LATE session 8pm – 9.30pm.

· The EARLY session allows families and younger players to finish at a reasonable time. The LATE session allows those travelling from work a little extra time to be ready to play at 8pm.

This also better prepares us if there are any further COVID-19 changes.

FORMAT - ROUND ROBIN

Summer competition in 2021 is different due to a long layoff from COVID-19 lockdowns and difficulties in knowing who is returning. So get your name down early.  Bookings via 0498 003 788

· The first week (week beginning 1 Feb 2021) was practice play followed by round robin competition for 8 weeks.

·  Both sessions each night are round robin best of 3 or 5 sets with groups of 4 or 5 players of similar standard.  Players play in either the early or late session (see above)

Pennant

When COVID-19 is not impacting, there are usually four competitive seasons each year, SUMMER, AUTUMN, WINTER, and SPRING.

Players are graded and divided into grades or divisions of either 2 or 3 player teams. These teams play either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings depending on the competition (2 or 3 player), the grade allocated, and the number of entries received.

Seasons consist of usually 8-10 weeks plus finals to determine the winners of each grade.

Some players elect only to be available as an emergency fill-in if required due to another’s absence. If you wish to be placed on the emergency list, simply contact the club on 0498 003 788

Our Association is affiliated with Table Tennis Victoria and therefore with Table Tennis Australia and the International Table Tennis Federation.

There is a modest fee to become a registered member which provides entitlement to a range of benefits including sports injury insurance, access to coaching and umpiring courses and eligibility to play in official tournaments throughout Victoria and Australia wide.

Championships and tournaments

Closed Championships  A closed championship is held each year to establish the top player in each grade. To be eligible to compete you must be a currently registered team member and/or have played in a team that year. Both singles and doubles are decided.

Open tournaments

Each year MPTTA runs an open tournament as part of the TTV coordinated tournament series held at various venues around Victoria.  See https://www.tabletennisvic.org.au/tournaments/

Handicap Tournaments  These tournaments are open to MPTTA players at any level of ability. New players will be graded by an official so they have the appropriate handicap according to their ability. Usually several of these tournaments are held each year.

Country week championships  In June each year TTV coordinates the Country Week Championships over the Queens Birthday weekend at venues such as Bendigo Table Tennis Association.  MPTTA is defined as a Country Association hence it enters multiple teams for two and a half days of intense competition and enjoyment, and reuniting with old friends.  It is a great way to improve your game and catch up with fellow players from all over Victoria.   Country Week is the biggest event on the Victoria table tennis calendar each year, only surpassed by the National Veterans Championships and the Australian junior and senior championships.

Australian Junior and Senior Table Tennis Championships  MPTTA has had past and current players at these events and has also hosted them in our world class facilities.

National Veterans Championships  These events for over 30s players are held annually around Australia and coordinated by state and national bodies e.g. Table Tennis Australia.  Each year MPTTA players participate if selected.  Many Australian past Olympians attend.

Junior competition

A juniors competition called the Junior Lightning League is run on Friday evenings under the guidance of experienced adult players and coaches. There are three major pennant seasons each year and coaching is available. Parents are encouraged to watch their children and to play socially if tables are available.   The junior competition is open to children and young adults 18 years and under. As with seniors, closed championships are conducted for juniors to establish the top players in their grades.

Table tennis rating system

Most competitive table tennis players in Australia and around the world have a rating based on their match performances.  The system is not unlike that for international tennis players.  Ratings are often used to assist in grading players for various competitions/events and for selection to represent the club, State, or Australia.

MPTTA member ratings are updated regularly after Pennant matches and tournaments/events.

2019 oceania/olympic qualification event at mptta

In December 2019 MPTTA hosted the 2019 ITTF Oceania Tour and Australian Olympic Qualification Tournament held over several days.  Top players from Australia, NZ, Fiji and PNG competed including some MPTTA players.   This was an outstanding success and a wonderful chance to see world class players for free.
